Willkommen in Deutschland! Germany and Europe Today
The School of Politics, Philosophy, Language and Communication Studies would like to invite Year 12 and 13 students and their teachers to a special one-day conference to get an insight into aspects of social and political life in contemporary Germany. The speakers are experts in their fields with contributions from the UEA School of Politics and Translation Studies as well as from the German Embassy Speaker Programme. The morning session will be dedicated to key questions around Germany’s role in Europe. Attention will also be drawn to the current political landscape in the country and we will take a look at political engagement amongst young people. Among the speakers will be Dr Katharina Karcher, a researcher into contemporary German politics at Cambridge University. The afternoon session will focus on German translation and the need for translators of German. Attendees at the conference will be invited to produce sample translations in small groups and present them to a panel of experts. During the breaks there will also be an opportunity to tune into the latest of German pop music. This is an excellent opportunity for students of German in the region to come together and explore issues that preoccupy Germans today but also to think about career options in translation. The event is free to attend but must be pre-booked.
